A house is an inter-related series of systems
designed to provide for your needs and wants in a shelter. In
the last hundred years, there has been a substantial increase in
the amount of resources and energy used to provide for those
needs and wants. Sustainable (or “green”) construction takes a
fresh look at what a house is, and provides strategies for
creating comfortable, convenient, effective shelter that is more
efficient, economical, healthful, and environmentally sound than
the type of shelter we’ve grown accustomed to over the decades.
The built environment, including buildings and other
development, plays a substantial role in the environmental
health, human welfare and economic stability of the United
States. These three issues constitute what economists refer to
as the "Triple Bottom Line;" they represent the cornerstones of
our well-being as a nation.

Triple Bottom Line: How Today's Best-Run Companies Are Achieving
Economic, Social and Environmental Success – and How You Can Too.
San Francisco: John Wiley and Sons, 2006.)
