Rob Nicely, President
Rob studied art at the University of California, Davis and has more than 25 years of experience in the construction industry. His rare combination of technical expertise and artistic sensibility enables him to provide a unique and exceptional experience for clients. As president, Rob leads by example. He is dedicated to the highest standards of quality and customer service, and to using the latest techniques and technologies to create environmentally mindful homes. He is a Certified Passive House Consultant. Rob is currently vice president of the Passive House California board of directors (January 2018 to January 2020), served on the board of directors of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s (NARI) Monterey County chapter, and is a 2007 graduate of Leadership Monterey Peninsula.
In his leisure time, Rob enjoys sculpting.
Patty Nicely, Office Manager
Patty graduated from the University of California, Davis with a BS in biology and moved to the Monterey Bay area in 1993. Before joining CBD in 2006, she worked as a marine biologist and toxicologist, and performed human and environmental risk assessments. Patty brings her passion for the planet and its resources to her role in “doing everything but build houses,” including IT, safety, accounting, payroll, billing, insurance and managing the detailed information involved in each project.
Patty is an avid gardener. As a Master Gardener, she enjoys helping the public find solutions to gardening challenges such as rainwater catchment and safer pest control. She also loves hanging out with her dogs.
Matt Hanner, Pre-production Manager
Matt joined Carmel Building & Design in 1998. He is certified by Build it Green as a Green Building Professional and as a Building Analyst Professional by the Building Performance Institute. Growing up in Fernandina Beach, Florida, Matt earned a BS in environmental science (with a minor in music) from Jacksonville University. He began his construction career while in junior high school working summers until graduating from college, and relocated to California in 1996.
In his spare time, he performs with local theater companies and plays soccer.
Jeff Sheets, Construction Manager
Jeff joined Carmel Building & Design in 2000 as lead carpenter and was soon promoted to project supervisor. He is a life-long resident of the Monterey Peninsula, graduating from Seaside High School. Jeff has completed a number of management and green building classes and is certified by Build it Green as a Green Building Professional. His building experience began at an early age, working in his father’s boat shop. Jeff ran his own company for eight years, remodeling and building homes in the Monterey area as well as in New Mexico.
Jeff has a wide range of interests including his son’s sporting events, dirt bike riding, water skiing, wake boarding, hunting and competitive shooting and is currently rebuilding a vintage truck.
Machell Sterbick, Project Manager
With 10-plus years of experience in interior space planning, Machell joined Carmel Building & Design in February 2014. She earned a BS in interior architecture from the UC, Davis School of Environmental Sciences and has a keen eye for details. As part of our project team, Machell will help our clients realize their vision of an ideal interior from finishes and floor coverings to cabinets, countertops and more.
In her spare time, Machell enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, exercising, painting and growing orchids.
