Timeless Treasure

A short stroll from the beach, this circa 1930 home was respectfully restored to retain its classic Carmel, board and batten style and the unmistakable feel of a refuge. A deck, built over the new garage—once a freestanding carport—melds seamlessly with the house, lending a welcoming, cohesive look. Indoor and out live comfortably together with most rooms opening onto a private central courtyard. Glass-paned, combination French-Dutch doors and abundant windows let in natural light and open to the ocean-scented breeze. Attention to even the tiniest detail in design and craftsmanship reflects the homeowners’ vision. Square footage was increased modestly while comfort, convenience and energy-efficiency were improved substantially with on-demand hot water, excellent insulation and effective air sealing. Clean lines and an uncluttered feel are created by ample built-ins that store necessities neatly out of sight. A detached guest house was replaced by a guest wing with bedroom, bath and living room/office that open onto the courtyard. A custom-crafted concrete bench, warmed by radiant heat, arcs the side of a stone fire pit and looks on one of the property’s majestic oaks and lush, drought-tolerant gardens.
